2022 Planeta La Segreta Grillo Sicilia

Planeta’s story began at Sambuca di Sicilia in Ulmo, on the estate owned by the family since the
1600’s. Here, three enthusiastic young Sicilians, Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, under the
guidance of Diego Planeta, began their winemaking venture in the mid-1980s. Subsequent years were
spent matching the extraordinarily diverse Sicilian soils with both indigenous and international
varieties. Planeta today encompasses six distinct wine estates in five regions across Sicily. Each
vineyard site is carefully cultivated with grapes that best compliment the local terroir.

The label for this single-variety La Segreta Grillo reflects a decorative detail of the Ulmo map—the
oldest Planeta property—a luxuriant area of fruit, flowers and vines within the walls, a synthesis of
the beautiful agricultural countryside of Sicily.

Hailing from Sicily, Grillo produces crisp and savory wines—some structured enough to offer
moderate aging potential. Lighter styles have citrus blossom and peach nuances, while more aromatic
versions deliver passion fruit, grapefruit and herbal sensations reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc. Lees
contact and barrel aging create more complex, mineral-driven wines loaded with apple and citrus
flavors. Vineyards closest to the sea produce wines with distinct saline notes.

Grillo was once used exclusively in Marsala production. Grillo was nearly abandoned, but, in 1990,
legendary Marsala producer Marco de Bartoli decided to vinify Grillo on its own as a dry, white wine.
This dry, white wine is a wonderful alternative to Pinot Grigio.

The grapes for the La Segreta Grillo were harvested in mid-September. The grapes were gathered by
hand, then de-leafed and sent for soft pressing. The must (freshly crushed juice) was decanted for 24
to 36 hours. At the end of fermentation, which occurred at 59 degrees Fahrenheit, the wine was
allowed to mature on the lees.

The resulting wine is clear yellow with aromas of citrus, pears and oregano. On the palate the wine is
fresh with notes of lemon.

This wine will pair well with all seafood, vegetable dishes and pastas, just like a Pinot Grigio.
