2021 Zuccardi Polígonos Malbec

The Zuccardi estate’s story started with a vineyard planted in 1963 by Alberto Zuccardi in the Maipu region of Mendoza. The rest of Alberto’s life was devoted to his passion for wine. His son José Alberto Zuccardi took over in 1990 and continued to grow the estate. Today the third generation of the family, Sebastian Zuccardi, runs the estate. Sebastian expanded the family’s holdings into the Uco Valley with a new winery that focuses on producing wines with identity, wines that reflect the various terroirs of the Uco Valley.

The Zuccardi family’s approach to sustainability starts with the environment and people before any product. They’re dedicated to producing the highest quality wines through sustainable practices such as a focus on nurturing biodiversity, organic farming, efficient irrigation practices, composting, water treatment, comprehensive waste and recycling efforts, and the use of solar energy. The winery itself is designed to be naturally energy efficient by maximizing natural light and minimizing electricity consumption. Its concrete walls fulfill the function of a thermal insulator, the movements of liquid are caused by gravity and the concrete-designed vessels allow for a natural control of the temperature of the wine as it ferments.

Valle de Uco is a wine region located in the Andes Mountains. The villages in the valley boast unique landscapes, climates and soils. Sebastian Zuccardi has this to say about his Polígonos line: “Polígonos is the expression of the villages of the Valley. These are wines that make us travel through those places, through their landscapes, climates and soils. Its grapes come from different places that can be imagined on a map with diverse shapes and edges. A capricious geometry as diverse as the sides of a Polygon. As diverse as the wines of each village.”

The San Pablo Malbec wine comes from the San Pablo village, from a vineyard at 4,593 feet above sea level. The climate here is a cold and extreme one. There are a lot of trees and streams in the region. The alluvial soils in the region originated in the Las Tunas River. The soils consist of a calcareous layer over medium-sized gravels.

The weather for the 2021 harvest was cool and humid. The grapes were harvested at the perfect balance of acidity and sugar with a strong tannin structure. The wine was fermented in concrete vessels with native yeasts. After fermentation the wine also aged in concrete till the winemaker deemed it ready to be bottled.

This 100% Malbec is deep red in color with violet hues. The nose is herbal with notes of fresh red fruits. The palate is lively with subtle tannins.

This wine was awarded 94 points by the Wine Advocate where it was described thus: “Of all the Malbecs in the Polígonos range, the 2021 Polígonos San Pablo Malbec is the lighter and more reductive one, with a slimmer palate and perhaps aromas of white flowers. This is also the lowest in alcohol and the one coming from the cooler place. It's floral and elegant, perfumed and ethereal, always the last Malbec to be harvested. All the Malbecs ferment and mature in concrete and transmit a sensation of purity and limestone minerality, with citrus and acid berry sensations. Here, they destem all the fruit, which is what they decided on, after many trials and errors, to avoid green notes. This has fine tannins and is medium-bodied, very elegant, fresh and pleasant, pure Malbec juice with no interference.”

This is a very versatile wine with its combination of dense fruit and soft tannins.

Recommended pairings for this wine are ribeye steak and lighter roast meats, like pork or poultry, with fruit sauce.
