The Prisoner Wine Company’s first wine “The Prisoner” was inspired by the drinkable “mixed blacks” made by the Italian immigrants who originally settled in Napa Valley. The Prisoner soon became recognized as one of the most innovative Napa Valley wines, leading the resurgence of California red blends and earning “cult wine” status.

The Prisoner Wine Company acquires grapes from more than 100 vineyards throughout California’s premier grape-growing regions, partnering with phenomenal growers who are dedicated to cultivating unique varieties. Director of Winemaking, Chrissy Wittmann, and her team of winemakers collaborate with this family of growers, visiting each vineyard site throughout the year to carefully assess the style and quality of every lot to make the best possible wine from each vintage.

From the beginning, The Prisoner Wine Company has had a commitment to fighting injustices, especially those tied to prison and policing systems. The company states their philosophy thus: “At The Prisoner, we know that the problems in the U.S. prison system are ingrained, nuanced, and seemingly intractable. We also believe that change can happen and that it starts with conversation, collaboration, and creativity.”

The Prisoner Wine Company describes its Unshackled brand as, “A California wine brand for those would rather express themselves than conform.”

Unshackled is one of several brands of the Prisoner Wine Company. Unshackled wines are designed to provide excellent quality at affordable prices and are created with the same care that goes into the luxury blends of The Prisoner label.

The 2021 Unshackled Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Merlot. The grapes come from the north and central coast of California. The wine is aged in French and American oak casks for 11 months before being bottled and released.

Winemaker notes describe this wine as, “Vibrancy of fruit is focal point of this wine. Featuring aromas of plum and blackberry with a hint of olive. Flavors of black stone fruit, clove, and dried herbs with solid tannin structure result in a flavor-forward Cabernet Sauvignon with balanced acidity.”

This very approachable wine pairs equally well with pork meatballs in tomato sauce or a dark chocolate and raspberry layer cake.

This wine is best served at cellar temperatures in the range of 55 – 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
