2021 Ernie Wls Wines Big Easy Chenin Blanc
Mar 2023 Selection
This 100% Chenin Blanc is from the Perdeberg region of South Africa where the hand-harvested grapes are sorted, destemmed, and lightly crushed to produce a wine the winemaker describes as, having, “an abundance of tropical fruit and some honeysuckle blossoms, yellow stone fruit, peach and passionfruit.”
Ernie Els is a celebrated South African golfer. In 1999 he decided to pursue his developing passion for fine wine by creating Ernie Els Wines located in the Helderberg region of Stellenbosch. With the help of award-winning winemaker Louis Strydom, Ernie Els Wines produced their maiden 2000 vintage of which was a “classic” Bordeaux blend. The intention from the outset was to focus on delivering a quality product that could hold its own in the company of the world’s finest wines. Since its launch, Ernie Els Wines has won plaudits and many prestigious awards around the world and the team continues to make a big impact on both the South African and international wine markets.
Winemaker Louis Strydom began his career at the Saxenburg Wine Estate. During his tenure there he worked with several winemakers in Switzerland, France, Italy, and the USA. In 1998 he joined Rust En Vrede where his red blend was in the Wine Spectator Top 100 wines for four consecutive years. In 2004 he left Rust En Vrede to join Ernie Els where his wines continue to win awards.
The Big Easy Chenin Blanc is made from 100% Chenin Blanc grapes picked from the Perdeberg region. The hand-harvested grapes are sorted, destemmed and lightly crushed. The wine then settles overnight before the sediment is racked off. Fermentation then proceeds for two months in contact with the lees and weekly stirring of the lees. The wine is then stabilized and bottled.
Winemaker’s tasting notes describe the resulting wine thus, “There is an abundance of tropical fruit. Some honeysuckle blossoms, yellow stone fruit, peach and passionfruit. The bouquet is summery, with added fresh cut apple and some fynbos notes. The palate that follows is juicy with ripe melon, white peach, and fresh, bright acidity. Jam packed with fruit flavors and a citrus edge to the medium-bodied lusciousness on the palate. The finish is persistent; rich fruited with an attractive youthful vibrancy.”
This wine will pair well with pork chops, seafood, soft cheeses and light pasta dishes.
The wine has a cellaring potential of 3 to 5 years.
