2021 Domäne Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Terrassen

Domäne Wachau is deeply rooted in the Wachau region and manages 30 percent of the entire Wachau vineyard area (400 hectares), including half of Austria’s most iconic vineyard, Achleiten. Additional famous vineyards such as Kollmitz, Liebenberg and Tausend-Eimer-Berg are found on the Domäne Wachau’s vineyard map and make it the only winery in the Wachau with wines from all of the most prestigious sites in the region.

The winery is led by Master of Wine Roman Horvath, whose team works closely with growers, and has instituted a vineyard quality assurance program. This sustainable vineyard management program includes measures of quality cultivation and is customized according to specific vineyards and vintage.

Austria imposes very stringent wine laws, and the Wachau region goes beyond these with their quality categories of Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd to assure uncompromising quality.

The Wachau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stretching from the banks of the Danube, benefits from the river’s role as a climate regulator. Many of the vineyards are very steep and terraced with very old, dry stone walls. The very best vineyards are vinified separately to produce single vineyard Grüner Veltliners and Rieslings.

The Grüner Veltliner from Domäne Wachau is the most classic example of this wine, characterized by fresh fruit, pronounced minerality, and a pronounced peppery flavor. It is a very versatile wine — wonderful by itself and pairing equally well with Austrian cuisine, Mediterranean dishes and Far Eastern cuisine.

Here is what the winery says about this wine, “Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Terrassen is a real benchmark wine from Wachau. The wine offers distinctive aromas of green apple, white pepper, hints of mango and delicate herbal notes. This Federspiel is a classic example of Grüner Veltliner with its medium-body crisp acidity, juicy fruits, and white spice on the finish.”

Enjoy this wine well-chilled.
