Miljenko “Mike” Grgich first gained international recognition at the celebrated “Paris Tasting” of 1976. Then, in that now-historic blind tasting, a panel of eminent French judges swirled, sniffed, and sipped an array of the fabled white Burgundies of France and a small sampling of upstart Chardonnays from the Napa Valley. When their scores were tallied, the French judges were shocked: they had chosen the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay, crafted by Mike Grgich, as the finest white wine in the world. The results stunned the international wine establishment and immediately earned Mike a reputation as one of the greatest winemakers in the world.

After his victory in Paris, Mike sat down with Austin Hills and his sister, Mary Lee Strebl, from the Hills Brothers Coffee family, and on Independence Day 1977, they created the Grgich Hills winery. Today the winery is led by Mike’s daughter, Violet Grgich. Mike’s nephew Ivo Jeramaz, who has been with the winery for over 30 years, is now the winemaker and vice president of vineyards and production.

Grgich Hills now owns five certified organic estate vineyards that are farmed without artificial pesticides or herbicides. They use wild yeast fermentation to create their food-friendly, balanced and elegant wines.

The 2020 estate rosé is a blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Zinfandel, 19% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc.

The 2020 growing season was cooler than the previous year and had very little rainfall. The harvest was early because of the dry soil. The crop was small but of exceptional quality.

Winemaker’s notes on the wine say, “This Rosé presents aromas of floral white peach, juicy nectarine, tart rhubarb and zesty lemon cream. The palate mirrors these aromas with flavors of peach and rhubarb pie along with strawberry, watermelon and citrus. The bright flavors and minerality are balanced by pleasant acidity that carries a long finish. One sip will leave you wanting more.”

Enjoy this wine on its own or with ham, turkey, salmon, or cheese.
