2019 Château Pesquié Les Terrasses Rouge
Oct 2023 Selection
The 2019 Les Terrasses Rouge is a bright, lively wine with enticing red fruit flavors and aromas of thyme and rosemary.
Château Pesquié is the story of three generations of passionate winemakers. Odette and René Bastide took over the vineyard in the beginning of the 1970’s and restructured a large part of it. They used to bring their grapes to the local Cooperative.
Edith and Paul Chaudière, René and Odette’s daughter and son-in-law, gave up their medical careers to take over the family estate in 1985. They traveled in many wine regions in France, Spain, Germany, the U.S., and others, to became sommeliers and work on terroir selection. This led them to create their own winery in 1990, first vintage of Château Pesquié.
Fred and Alex Chaudière, the two sons of Edith and Paul, have gradually taken over since 2003 with the clear objective to take it to the next level and show the world how amazing the Ventoux terroir is.
In the 80’s, Paul Chaudière began sustainable farming. When Alexandre & Frederic took over, they started moving to organic farming (first plot converted in 2007). The estate is now fully converted to organic agriculture and certified by ECOCERT, France’s certification body.
The soils in Ventoux are rich in limestone, the vineyards are at higher elevations than those in the Rhone valley and the microclimate results in warm days and cool nights. Syrah and Grenache thrive in this region and produce fruit with concentrated and complex flavors.
The 2019 Les Terrasses Rouge is a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah. The grapes were hand-harvested, destemmed, crushed, and fermented with natural yeast for a 15-day maceration. The Grenache was aged for 6 months in stainless steel and oak foudres. The Syrah was aged in neutral French oak barrels for 6 months. After aging, the wines were blended to create the Les Terrasses Rouge.
Winemaker’s notes describe the wine thus: “Deep ruby color. Intense nose with spicy notes (especially black pepper) and red berries. This very balanced wine offers very round tannins and fresh berries aromas, with some floral and spicy flavors.”
Wine Enthusiast, Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate all award this wine between 90 and 94 points.
This is a wine that is very easy to pair with pizzas, charcuterie, vegetable pies, salads, poultry, and roasted or grilled meats.
