2018 Feudi Di San Gregorio Rubrato Aglianico
Feb 2023 Selection
This Southern Italian bold red grape ripens late to produce a wine that is intense ruby red, with a nose of wild berry, licorice and herbal notes, and a taste that is balanced with a finish reminiscent of fresh fruit.
Aglianico is a bold red grape that ripens late in the year and is usually harvested in November. It is indigenous to the mountains of Southern Italy. Taurasi, the age-worthy Italian red wine is produced primarily from the Aglianico grape.
Rubrato Aglianico is an expression of the wine in its youth. The wine is fermented and macerated in stainless steel tanks for about 2-3 weeks, and matures in stainless steel tanks for about 10 months. It is then aged for at least 6 months in the bottle before being released.
The resulting wine is an intense ruby red in color. The nose has wild berry, licorice and herbal notes. The taste is balanced with a finish reminiscent of fresh fruit.
The 2018 vintage was awarded 93 points by James Suckling who described the wine thus: “Blackberries, smoke, ash, bark, rosemary and olives in brine. This is full-bodied with lightly stemmy yet smooth tannins and a lot of tension on the finish. Drink from 2022.”
The winemaker recommends pairing this wine with roasted red and white meats, eggplant parmigiana and Sartù di Riso (a traditional Neapolitan dish).
